History of the Cleveland Hungarian Development Panel
The Cleveland Hungarian Development Panel is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization which supports business, education, health and human service projects in Cleveland, Hungary and Central Europe.
Since its creation in 1990, the Panel has distributed over $1,500,000 to fund grants, projects and scholarships.
Created after the fall of the Iron Curtain, the CHDP was spearheaded by John Hutchins, (former director of the International Center at the Cleveland Clinic), with other local Hungarian leaders. Hutchins realized the need to help the Hungarians achieve the 20th century standards of Western Europe. The CHDP worked to provide funding to support this goal. Hungary indeed made significant progress; this was the foundation for Hungary’s entry into the European Union in 2004.
Much work remains to be done, and so the CHDP continues its mission: to provide assistance and the exchange of ideas for Hungarian projects in the areas of commerce, education, health and human services. Indeed, we expect the Cleveland Hungarian Development Panel to continue its mission in perpetuity, and to that end the CHDP became an Organizational Partner of the Cleveland Foundation in 2020.
Projects Funded by CHPD
